We have to go all the way back to 1977 to trace the origin of The Leatherworks. With a background in art and design, Kent Begnaud began collecting the necessary tools and equipment to turn his personal craft into a full time endeavor. With the help of other talented artisans in the Twin Cities, Kent quickly added to his bag of tricks, making tooled belts, hand cobbled sandals, briefcases, purses and handbags.

Through the 80’s and mid-90’s, Kent continued to build his expertise and understanding of the trade. Frequent trips to area tanneries helped to increase his knowledge of leather and its unique qualities. New manufacturing equipment and techniques allowed the company to stay ahead of the advancing number of imports.

1996 was a special year for Kent – the year he met the love-of-his life and future wife, Lee. It didn’t take long for the two of them to realize they were meant for each other – as partners in life and in business.

Lee has proven to be the perfect mesh for an artistic guy like Kent. With a background in sales and customer service, Lee is responsible for governing the business side of their growing venture.

Styles have certainly changed from the hippie-influenced designs back in the 70’s. The LW look today is hip yet elegant, functional and contemporary. They have added their signature Begnaud flair with the use of embossed exotic grained cowhides.

To this day, Kent and Lee still enjoy everything about the leather business – including that intoxicating aroma that greets them as they enter the shop each morning. Their “mom & pop” business has certainly matured, but they still hold true to the same belief – take care of the customer, and the customer will take care of you.

They extend their heartfelt thanks to those who have supported the company over the years!

Kent and Lee Begnaud live in beautiful St. Paul Park, Minnesota, a small Mississippi river town just ten minutes south of the Twin Cities.

While they consider Leatherworks their favorite hobby, when there’s spare time, Kent likes to fish and canoe, and Lee enjoys cooking and entertaining.
